Proteomics: Return to the fold | The Economist

Proteomics: Return to the fold | The Economist: "Return to
Proteomics May 8th 2008 | from PRINT EDITION

FOR sheer adrenaline, the new computer game “foldit”, does not match the likes of “Grand Theft Auto IV”. But for the world's obsessive problem solvers, a three-dimensional Tetris which allows them to help design a new life-saving vaccine seems certain to be a hit.

“foldit” is the latest incarnation of a project, called Rosetta@home, that uses spare computer time, via a screensaver, to work out how proteins fold. Proteins are the building blocks of life inside cells; they are first made as long chains of molecules and work properly only after they have folded into their final shape. But understanding the rules of protein folding remains one of biology's central problems."

Instructional Technologist, Explained: "Instructional Technologist, Explained

I bill myself as an instructional technologist, which means I’m often met with blank or puzzled stares. I thought it might be useful to explain my rational for using this title.

Warning: this post may bore you to death, or cause you to get caught up in a tangled web of semantics.

In my opinion, an instructional technologist is a person who specializes in utilizing technology for instructional purposes. (Duh!) It’s a very broad title that can cover many different and often only tangentially-related duties."

How To Embed A Custom Logo Design In A QR Code | Content Developer

Can you customize QR Codes with your own design features, logo or brand identity?

Well, it turns out you can. Pretty easily. At least up to a point.

While researching the topic, one of the earliest examples I could find of someone hacking a QR Code with their own branded design elements was .

List of countries by length of coastline - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The coastline paradox states that a coastline does not have a well-defined length. Measurements of the length of a coastline behave like a fractal, being different at different scale intervals (distance between points on the coastline at which measurements are taken). The smaller the scale interval (meaning the more detailed the measurement), the longer the coastline will be.[1] This 'magnifying' effect is greater for convoluted coastlines than for relatively smooth ones. For example, as seen on satellite image websites, the length of Canada's very convoluted coastline at a scale interval of 500 km is only about 20,000 km, less than a tenth of the value given in the table. On the other hand, Australia's coastline at 500 km intervals is about 12,500 km, around half the value in the table.[2]

Can you do it consistently and repeatedly, and then consistently drive down that development time? This session will provide real numbers from real projects with real results. You can see the type of content developed, how fast it can be done, and how much it should cost to build in terms of hours and resources. You will see real samples of XML-based courseware, rapid e-Learning using Articulate, and mLearning/Podcasts, and the budgets broken down in time and in dollars so that you can learn to get a handle on the cost and time to develop."

    Notepad | 5.7

Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License.

Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendliness, Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.

This project is mature. However, there may be still some bugs and missing features that are being worked on. If you have any questions or suggestions about this project, please post them in the forums. Also, if you wish to make a feature request, you can post it there as well. But there's no guarantee that I'll implement your request.

You're encouraged to translate Notepad++ into your native tongue if there's not already a translation present in theBinary Translations page. And if you want, help translating Notepad++ official site into your native tongue would be greatly appreciated.

    Google Scribe

Google launched a very interesting tool that offers suggestions as you type: Google Scribe. It's not exactly the service I anticipated 3 years ago, but Google Scribe works surprisingly well. For example, I started to type "This works sur" and Google suggested "This works surprisingly well", which is exactly what I wanted to type. Instead of typing 14 characters, I could only type "1" or press Enter to select the first suggestion.

Social Media and Public Sector Policy Dilemmas Public Sector Marketing 2.0 – Mike Kujawski's blog on strategic marketing & social media engagment

The report was developed based on consultations with numerous stakeholders across the country and abroad. It covers among other things, access to information, security, leadership, records retention, privacy, and the need for a culture of trust. It talks a great deal about the biggest impediment to government use of social media, which I have mentioned numerous times in this blog, i.e. the “clay layer” of middle management and the hierarchical public service culture. The report also quite accurately segments public servants into zealots, collaborators and resisters (from a social media engagement perspective), which is exactly in-line with what I have experienced as a consultant for government. Most importantly however, it cites the numerous strategic and successful initiatives being launched across the country, which are now feeding into a growing list of best practices. This document should be on every senior leader’s desk.

How to free up space in Gmail

more than enough space to store your email, but for the last two weeks my Gmail account has hovered ominously above 95% of the allowed storage quota. When it finally peaked at 98% (2725 MB of 2780 MB), I had to do something.

However, forwarding all those messages by hand or downloading 2.7 gigabytes of mail were out of the question. I simply had to start hitting that delete button. Using a few effective filters that helped determine what I could safely delete, I took my Gmail account from 98% of quota down to 67% of quota without losing one important message. Here's how I did it.

If you've forgotten a simple password for a Word or Excel file, this free utility is a good way to recover it. Compared to full-fledged password crackers, Free Word Excel Password Wizard offers a very limited set of attacks. However, the free demos of fuller-featured programs typically let you recover passwords of only one or two characters--in other words, they're useless for any practical purpose. The developers of this program acknowledge it's only useful for short, simple passwords (for instance, English words) of up to eight characters, but it does a decent job cracking those. You can choose character sets and dictionary files, and in our tests the program discovered the password lover in a few seconds. Give it a shot before moving on to more powerful remedies.

    Viacom vs YouTube: Inconvenient Truths

"For years, Viacom continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, even while publicly complaining about its presence there. It hired no fewer than 18 different marketing agencies to upload its content to the site. It deliberately "roughed up" the videos to make them look stolen or leaked. It opened YouTube accounts using phony email addresses. It even sent employees to Kinko's to upload clips from computers that couldn't be traced to Viacom. And in an effort to promote its own shows, as a matter of company policy Viacom routinely left up clips from shows that had been uploaded to YouTube by ordinary users." (YouTube blog)

But a more coherent approach is to start with your target audience and determine what kind of relationship you want to build with them, based on what they are ready for. You can use the tool on this page to get started.

Forrester's Social Technographics® classifies consumers into six overlapping levels of participation (see short presentation). Based on our survey data we can see how participation varies among different groups of consumers, globally. We also analyze the participation of people who buy technology.
